Question by charles t: Karl Marx is quoted as saying “give a man a fish” can anyone provide a cite for where he said it?
the full quote is “give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you lose a great business opportunity.” I have done extensive searches and can find many people who say he said it, but nobody cites the specific source of that quote. In which writing, in which speech, in which letter, did he say this?

In the New Testament of the Bible. The quote originated from the Bible stating, “Give a man a fish you feed him for the day, teach a man to fish you feed him for a life time.”
Although Karl Marx has a point for this day in age, it is best to better a man than to have him rely on you, as if you were a drug dealer.

I’ve heard a similar quote that goes all the way back to Biblical days. I doubt Karl Marx was the first to say it. Good Luck !
That is a chinese proverb, not a saying by Marx.
I don’t know when or if Karl Marx said it, but he was just quoting Jesus Christ.

Sounds to me like someone changed the quote and attributed it to Marx.
“If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. If you teach a man to learn, you feed him for a lifetime and he doesn’t have to only eat fish.” -Chinese Proverb
The research I have done says that Karl Marx did not quote this as stated above…..that “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” is actually a Chinese proverb and that Karl Marx said “Sell a man a fish, and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and you lose a great business opportunity.” I’ve also found slight references to the Communist Manifesto being where this quote is found…..Otherwise, it does seem a bit difficult to find an exact source for this quote. I have studied Marx extensively and read much of his writings, inculding personal letters, and I have never come across that quote. That is not to say he did not write it, but it was certainly not in a major work. (Unless it is buried in Capital somewhere, there is just too much there to remember it all.)
